I took a couple of years off while attending New College in Sarasota FL, during which I earned some money, sold my stereo, and bought a 1969 Alfa Romeo Spider (similar to the car the Dustin Hoffman character has in the movie "The Graduate" (his was a '67, which had slightly different running lights and a carburetor, while the '69 had mechanical fuel injection)).

In the year I owned it I put 20,000 miles on it: mostly just going for long drives after work (I first worked as a security guard at NC, on the 8pm-4am shift, after which I'd drive east (Sarasota is on FL's west coast) until the sun came up, then head home and to bed...); one trip to Wyoming to attend a 5-week wilderness mountaineering course at NOLS, returning to Florida via New York (arrived home driving on gas fumes, to no money and no job and my rent-contributing roommate having been thrown out by my assholic landlord (it was an adventurous time!) -- after being utterly unable to find a job I decided to finish a very-late school paper, called my professor, who was a part-time professor who ran/owned a vending company, and got a job from him running a vending machine route (never did finish that paper); and a trip to resume college at UC Santa Cruz, aborted when they decided I wasn't really a resident and so had to pay out-of-state tuition -- on my way back to Florida (where I had nothing at all waiting for me), I stopped off in Houston because of car trouble and I had a good friend there, and ended up staying for a while, sharing an apartment with the friend and working in the parts department of an Alfa (also Volvo & VW) dealership (from which I was fired for not being sufficiently enthusiastic about their routine fraud against customers (I've since never taken my car to a dealership!)), followed by a job at a gourmet ice cream shop where the ice cream machine terminated half of my left middle finger... -- so I decided to go back and finish at NC.

When I'd decided to return to New College, I knew I had to sell the Alfa because I couldn't afford the cost of owning a car (and I needed the money) -- I took these pictures soon after I had the body cleaned up and repainted.
